Openwave (OPWV) says China Unicom has purchased an additional 6.4 million Openwave Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) licenses and upgraded its entire subscriber base to MAG 6.
MAG 6 is a WAP 2 compliant gateway that optimizes content rendering between different markup and image formats and enables China Unicom to scale to the demands for current and legacy handsets and new types of rich content.
To date, China Unicom has purchased 11.4 million MAG licenses from Openwave since the initial trial of the Unicom Unlimited service in early 2002.
The WAP 2 data service is one of the fastest growing value-added services on the China Unicom network; 95% of the 11.4 million WAP licenses have been purchased on or after December 2002.
