Shanghai TV Station, an affiliate of Shanghai Media Group, has won China's first IPTV license.
The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) announced yesterday that Shanghai TV Station has been approved to run audio and video program broadcasting on televisions and mobile phones.
In addition to broadcasting its own programs, Shanghai TV Station can also operate programs of other institutions on the new platform. In order to facilitate the new service, Shanghai Media Group has set up two companies specially responsible for marketing and operation of the IPTV service.
IPTV refers to television broadcasting service based on IP protocol. It targets television sets or PCs as display terminals and provides brandband service such as digital television program broadcasting, video frequency program ordering or recording.
