China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) says that China's netizens now number more than 100 million.
The Xinhua statement quotes the MII's spokesperson, Xi Guohua, but does not specify one what day that number of 100 million was surpassed or how the data was acquired.
Usually, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) compiles online statistics and releases those as official data. However CNNIC's website makes no reference to any recent study or figures.
