To get enough fiber and bandwidth for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China Netcom plans to work with Japan's NEC to invest US$24 million to complete part of the East Asia Cable (EAC) by May 2005.
The EAC is a 17700-kilometer underwater cable line that connects Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. Netcom's plan is to create a 350-kilometer link to its Tsingdao International Sea Cable Station. The cable will have a capacity of 40 gigabytes.
China Netcom previously signed an agreement with the Beijing Olympic Organization Committee to provide fixed line telecom related services for the games in 2008.
