The short message address registration institution MobNIC has told local media that China's two major mobile communications operators, China Mobile (CHL) and China Unicom(CHU), will soon adopt "50120" as their unified short message service code across the country.
Users under both operators can receive necessary information such as exchange rates, flight numbers and regional codes through sending their respective inquiry to "50120". The fee per message is CNY0.01, but there are no extra fees charged.
Ma Yanli, secretary general of MobNIC, says the potential of short message service can be better expanded with the consensus reached between the two operators.
At present, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom (CHA) and China Netcom each have their own codes. This has become a big inconvenience for users.
