According to ICANN, the first mobile phone domain name in China has been successfully registered by China Mobile (CHL), the largest mobile service operator in the country.
China Mobile has also registered 18 other trademark domain names related to the new .MOBI domain extension.
China Mobile was eligible to make the registration between May 22 and May 29. This is was the so-called "Protection Period" for .MOBI registration during which only members from global mobile industry associations or organizations such as GSM, CTIA and MMA were allowed to register domains.
China Mobile representatives say they hope .MOBI will develop well in the future and they suggest companies take actions as soon as possible before their .MOBI domain names fall into the hands of others.
