Neil Edwards, president of mTLD (.Mobi), says that the ordinary Chinese public will be able to register their own .mobi domain names starting September 26, 2006.
.Mobi registry says that it has signed partnerships with two Chinese companies, net.cn and Qihoo.com. The former will be responsible for .mobi domain name registration and the latter will provide a search service based on .mobi.
Edwards says that net.cn and Qihoo.com are only their first two partners in China and they may increase the partner number in China in the future.
According to international convention, domain name owners usually choose three to four companies in a country to develop its new domain name. Based in Ireland, .Mobi is mainly engaged in providing mobile Internet registration services. So far, China Mobile was the first company in China that had registered one domain name with the new domain extension.
