China Netcom Broadband, a subsidiary of China Netcom (CN), is reportedly working with Google (GOOG) on a broadband search engine.
As the first step of their cooperation, Google's search tool will be wedged onto the webpage of CNCMAX.cn, which is the portal website of China Netcom Broadband. They will also deepen their cooperation on new service developments based on search. No financial terms of the agreement have been released, however based on previous Google deals, this deal will probably involve advertising revenue share.
Last April, China Netcom first turned its eyes to the search engine sector when it launched its Chinese Yellow Pages. The China Telephone Directory Company, a yellow page operator affiliated with China Netcom Group, launched www.chinayp.com.cn in cooperation with www.net.cn. This new website engaged in local online yellow pages search services and was expected to challenge traditional search service providers like Google and Baidu.
