Under the commission of China's Ministry of Information Industry and in cooperation with telecom operators and many other websites, the Internet Society of China has formed a Green Network Alliance to celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 17.
The alliance plans to take many effective measures to actively develop and promote healthy network content, bolster the construction of a green network culture and create a healthy, harmonious and vigorous network environment for teenagers in China.
As a first step, they will initiate a teenager special Internet project to develop a group of teenager friendly websites.
World Telecommunication Day is celebrated annually on May 17, marking the founding of the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.
In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called upon the UN General Assembly to declare May 17 as World Information Society Day to focus on the importance of ICT and the wide range of issues related to the Information Society raised by WSIS. The General Assembly adopted a resolution in March 2006 stipulating that World Information Society Day shall be celebrated every year on May 17.
