A representative from China Telecom (CHA) has disclosed to local media that in coordination with the Chinese ministries' campaign against online porn, China Telecom had closed 8808 illegal websites over the past four months.
Miao Wei, general manager of China Telecom's Internet and Value-added Service Department, says that since April, when ten Chinese ministries started a special campaign against online porn, China Telecom had closed down a total of 9593 websites that had been formally registered and 8808 websites that had been involved in spreading pornographic or fraudulent content. Miao said that China Telecom had punished 265 Internet data centers that lacked licenses and notified 506 Internet service providers to verify registrations on behalf of more than 48000 websites.
Furthermore, China Netcom's latest data shows that it shut down 104 illegal websites during the campaign.
Due to new programs aimed at thwarting mobile message spam on the Little Smart PHS platform, Miao says users' complaints on that network also declined by 52%.
