Chinese Internet users receive an average of 13.8 emails per week, with 9.2 being junk mail, according to a survey on the development of the Internet in China released here Tuesday.

China's Internet surfers send an average of 4.3 emails while spending 12.3 hours a week online, said the twice-yearly survey by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). Each user has an average of 1.5 email addresses, including 1.3 free ones, said the survey.

The survey found that 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. remain the peak times for Internet surfing, with around 46% and 45.4% of users surf online during each of the two hours, the survey found. Obtaining information and killing leisure time are the top two reasons for Chinese to go online with 42.3% and 34.5% of China's 87 million netizens using the Internet for searching information and for fun respectively, the survey showed.
