A two-day national defence science and technology industry convention in Beijing has revealed that China's scientists have set their sights on producing technological breakthroughs in pressurizer nuclear plants, new-type rockets and large transport planes to meet the needs of China's development.

Spokesman Wu Weiren revealed that scientists are currently working on the key technologies of pressurized water reactor nuclear plants, which could contribute as much as 5% of the entire electricity generation capacity by 2010. Scientists are also busy developing new carrier rockets, powered by liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen and refined kerosene–these new rockets would create powerful propulsion without leaving the usual pollution and toxins in the air.

Timetables for these new products have yet to be specified.
