Lucent Technologies Signs Optical Expansion Contract

Lucent Technologies today announced an optical expansion contract worth several million U.S. dollars with Beijing Communication Corporation (BCC), a subsidiary of China Netcom.

Under the terms of the contract, Lucent will supply its next-generation optical products, including the LambdaUnite Multi-Service Switch (MSS) and the Metropolis ADM MultiService Mux, to assist BCC in building a highly scalable optical transport network that meets both its current and future bandwidth and service growth needs. The expansion project, to be cutover by the year end, marks the first win for LambdaUnite MSS in BCC.

Lucent's next-generation multiservice switches and metro multiservice multiplexers will complement the existing Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) network and help BCC expand its network capacity and reduce operating costs while delivering new revenue-generation services such as gigabit and 10 gigabit Ethernet. Developed by Bell Labs, the LambdaUnite MSS is a next-generation optical transport system and switch that bridges traffic between data-intensive metro networks and high-speed optical core networks, connecting cities, campuses and corporate networks to larger, long-haul public networks. Its standards-compliant technology will enable BCC to seamlessly integrate existing backbone and metro optical networks. This flexible single-shelf system was recently optimized for smaller metro applications, supporting in-service upgrades from 160G to 320G, as well as to 640G, allowing the system to grow when network capacity increases. Mesh restoration capabilities were also added to help carriers migrate to new mesh-based networks, while at the same time, leveraging traditional protection architectures.

The Metropolis ADM Multi-Service Multiplexer is an integrated Ethernet over SDH metro access multiplexer, which enables service providers to migrate seamlessly from existing TDM networks to data-aware packet networks. This product integrates 2Mb/s access and cross-connect functionality for 10 gigabits-per-second applications. Its low power consumption and small footprint also help service providers save on operating expenses.
