A virus is a microscopic infectious agent that can replicate only inside the living cells of an organism. It consists of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat and sometimes a lipid envelope. Viruses can cause a variety of diseases in animals, plants, and even bacteria, by disrupting normal cellular functions and hijacking the host cell’s machinery for replication.
