Tsinghua University has announced a breakthrough in the development of key technology for the next generation of Internet.

On CERNET2, a recently-opened trunk test network of the next-generation Net, China's first core router based on the Ipv6 protocol operated successfully. The next-generation Net represents the latest stage of development, with higher speeds, larger address capacity and better security, which can only be utilized when equipment operated on it is Ipv6 compatible. Currently only a few countries have developed Ipv6 core routers.

China's began the research two years ago. The new core router has been jointly developed by the computer department of Tsinghua University and Tsinghua Unisplendour Bitway Networking Technology Co., Ltd. The new router boasts a transmission capacity of 320 billion bits per second and a forwarding ability of 96 million times per second.
