After investing over 1 billion in WCDMA, UTStarcom (UTSI) might have to give up the standard with the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) announcing TD-SCDMA as the national standard.
Since 2000, UTStarcom has conducted a total of 20 acquisitions for WCDMA solutions and it has injected much more to WCDMA than to Little Smart. However, the company has not made any dramatic progress in WCDMA.
In declaring the company's 2006 development, UTStarcom's president and CEO Wu Ying said that UTStarcom would by no means give up 3G, however, it would focus more on CDMA2000 which could bring immediate benefit to the company, while giving equal attention to TD-SCDMA.
