Su Qiang, a software engineer in Shanghai, has been sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of CNY50000 because of data theft.
The 33-year old Su was a Computer Science major at his university. Before he was detained, he worked as an ATM software engineer, responsible for programming, debugging and maintaining software for ATMs. By taking advantage of his duties, he reportedly compiled a range of programs that enabled him to retain customer's bank card numbers and other necessary information to access to other people's bank accounts.
Su then made some fake bank cards by using this information and withdrew a total of more than CNY60,000 in cash with these cards in Shanghai, Wuxi and Nanjing before his behavior was identified.
More than 16 consumers have reportedly suffered from Su's illegal behavior.
