According to information from an insider of Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce group has invested in Indian short video community product VMate and the investment amount is reportedly on the USD100 million level.
After the investment, VMate will become a new innovation business group of Alibaba, along with DingTalk, Tmall Genie, Ali AI Lab, and AliOS.
It is said that at the beginning of 2019, UC president Zhu Shunyan was appointed as head of big cultural entertainment innovation business of Alibaba and VMate, as the first project after the appointment, is created from UC international business.
Public files show that VMate is a short video UGC community product targeting young people in India and it mainly focuses on life record and sharing of ordinary people. VMate was established by UC at the end of 2017.
Indian market watchers revealed that VMate's active user number has reached tens of millions and it generates over one million UGC contents on a daily basis.
