China has successfully expanded its burgeoning space-based communications infrastructure with the launch of a new batch of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, marking another step in Beijing’s strategic push to rival Western constellations such as SpaceX’s Starlink.
On April 9, at 3:38 a.m. local time, a Long March 6A carrier rocket lifted off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China. The mission successfully placed the “Satellite Internet Low-Orbit Group 21” into their predetermined orbital slots. According to state media, the launch marked the 637th flight of the Long March rocket series, highlighting the increasing cadence of China’s aerospace operations.
The deployment follows a coordinated regulatory effort by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The ministry reportedly fast-tracked domestic frequency coordination and issued the necessary radio station licenses and frequency usage permits to ensure the project’s seamless implementation. This bureaucratic alignment underscores the high level of state priority placed on establishing a robust national satellite internet network.
For Western nation policymakers and the private sector, the steady expansion of Chinese LEO capabilities represents a significant shift in the global telecommunications landscape. As the U.S. currently leads in satellite broadband through Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, China’s rapid development of its “Guowang” (National Network) and “G60 Starlink” constellations aims to secure orbital slots and spectrum—both of which are finite global resources.
The acceleration of China’s satellite program has implications for both global digital trade and national security. By establishing its own orbital infrastructure, Beijing seeks to reduce its reliance on foreign technology while providing a state-backed alternative for high-speed internet in emerging markets.
