The Trump administration has lifted restrictions on TikTok use on federal government devices after determining that the social media app does not pose a national security threat after shifting its US operations to American investors.

The White House Office of Management and Budget called off a 2023 directive that halted the use of the video-sharing service on government equipment due to concerns about TikTok’s previous Chinese ownership.

The recent decision comes from a Justice Department ruling that TikTok no longer qualifies as a covered application under a 2022 law that prohibited its use on federal platforms.

The significant policy change comes after the finalization of a deal in January that controls TikTok’s business from Chinese parent ByteDance Ltd.

According to the department viewpoint, American companies have revised the recommendation engine and cybersecurity programs developed by ByteDance to protect records from and ease the growing concerns that initially motivated the prohibition.

TikTok and the Beijing government have rejected claims by US officials that user data could be misused or that China could use the app to promote misleading narratives.

Trump has extended his support for TikTok stating that the app itself helped him win the 2024 election; moreover, he expressed gratitude to Chinese leader Xi Jinping for assisting with the approval of the sale.
