Chinese Researchers Develop AI System to Track F-22 and F-35 Heat Signatures

Chinese researchers have developed a lightweight AI system that can identify heat signatures resembling those of F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters. The system boasts a recognition accuracy above 90 percent for simulated targets, potentially aiding in the detection of aircraft built around stealth technology. Unlike radar-based detection, the AI system focuses on analyzing heat produced by an aircraft's engines, exhaust, and heated surfaces during flight.

The F-22 and F-35 aircraft are designed to reduce their visibility to radar and other sensors, making detection and tracking challenging for adversaries. To combat this, the Chinese researchers claim their AI system can distinguish between the heat signatures of these stealth aircraft and other airborne objects. The system's ability to differentiate between aircraft-generated heat and flare emissions could provide a new basis for separating actual aircraft from decoys.

Laboratory testing of the AI recognition model reportedly achieved recognition accuracy exceeding 90 percent. While the system shows promise in simulated scenarios, its operational performance against real F-22 and F-35 aircraft remains unverified. Real aircraft exhibit changing thermal patterns under different conditions, introducing challenges such as varying speeds, altitudes, and maneuvering dynamics.
