Niu Lai, Chinese Film Gains Virality Over Derided Low-Tech Animation – Is It Available In India?

Released in China on August 5, 2026, the animated movie titled Niu Lai (meaning The Cow Is Coming) has become a talking point on the internet. As the internet is busy talking about how “bad” it is “in every aspect imaginable,” it has now giving tought competition to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day at China’s box office. Audiences have reportedly been rushing to the theatres to see how “terrible” the movie really is.

Is Niu Lai Available in India?

The 86-minute animated movie centring on the blossoming relationship between a newborn calf and a skylark, unfolding through an abstract dream sequence, is not available to watch in India. No theatrical or OTT release schedule has been announced as of yet. If an Indian viewer wants to watch the movie, they can access clips from the film which are going viral on several social media platforms.

Niu Lai China Box Office Collection

According to a report by NDTV, the movie has initially earned 7,700 yuan, around INR 1.04 lakh, in 10 days of its release, with less than 300 tickets being sold. It is to be noted that there was no trailer released ahead of the movie’s release, no pre-release publicity or even any promotional tour.

A newly released animated film called “Niu Lai” (??) is going viral for all the wrong reasons in China.

As clips from the film started going viral, with the audiences complaining about its crude computer graphics, stiff characters, confusing plotline, and awkward voice acting, many called it “worse than AI,” terming it as “worst movie of 2026.” However, the backlash urged others to go watch the film in theatres, as they wanted to witness for themselves whether the film was really as bad as it was being described.

Quoting a report by the Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan, NDTV stated that Niu Lai has made a collection of more than 14.9 million yuan, approximately INR 20 crore. It has been holding its ground against Hollywood blockbusters, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Niu Lai Was Made By Only Two People

The media publication stated that the movie was made by only two people over the course of five years. Believed to be a mother-and-son team, Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang are credited as its writers, directors, producers and voice actors.
