Leaders at OpenAI, Google and Anthropic have reportedly been meeting regularly to discuss establishing a regulatory framework for the artificial intelligence industry amid increasing concerns they could lose control of the technology with disastrous consequences.
And President Donald Trump is not a fan.
The president spent a good deal of time Monday complaining about the prospect on social media while also pushing for more data centers, which Americans are remarkably united in hating.
Whistleblowers have likened AI to “summoning an alien species … that we don’t fully understand.” But Trump said Monday their concerns are all a “HOAX.”
“Concerning AI, when, in the History of Business, did anyone see the Leaders of an Industry call for Regulation that, if strongly implemented, will drive them into oblivion and bankruptcy?” Trump asked rhetorically, kicking off a rambling 200-word screed on Truth Social.
He continued: “AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX, no different from RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA — UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #1 — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #2 — and all of the other HOAXES and SCAMS that America was forced to endure through the Destructionists’ and Deviants’ foul play and illegal conduct.”
The president did not elaborate on why he believed it to be a “hoax.”
Instead, he ended the rant by fear-mongering China and declaring that “AI, and Data Centers” … “will not be stopped by brilliantly run Destructive Forces during the Term of President DONALD J. TRUMP!”
Earlier in the day, Trump said that the only guardrails the industry needs is Trump himself.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump said glowingly of himself.
(Now would be a good time to remember the time Trump bought a Tesla because, he said, “Everything’s computer!”)
Echoing his boss, Vice President JD Vance also told reporters Monday he’s uncertain about regulating AI companies, calling the prospect “a trojan horse.”

“I feel a little bit weird about the fact that you have so many frontier AI tech companies kind of coming to the government and begging the government to regulate them,” Vance said ahead of an event in Olathe, Kansas. ”It feels a little bit to me like a bit of a trojan horse.”
In contrast, Democratic leaders in both the House and Senate on Monday called for Congress to pass a law establishing government oversight of AI.
“Republicans have completely abandoned their responsibility to legislate and engage in public policy efforts in a responsible fashion in the area of artificial intelligence,” House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said.
