Filmmaker Nithilan Saminathan’s much-acclaimed thriller film Maharaja, co-starring Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap, was quite the rage in 2024 when it was released. The film became a trending topic of discussion on the internet, as it received rave reviews from critics as well as the audience. Well, now it is being reported that the movie might be remade in Hollywood, with Matthew McConaughey headlining the project.
Maharaja Gets A Hollywood Remake?
The makers of the film, on Wednesday, took to their official social media handles to confirm the news. Sharing the poster of the film, where Septhupathi is seen sitting on a chair with a hatchet in his hand, with debris surrounding him, LA’s Mount Hollywood is seen behind him. They captioned the post, “A HISTORIC MILESTONE! #Maharaja becomes the first Tamil film to be made in Hollywood by a major studio. #MakkalSelvan @actorvijaysethupathi. Written & directed by @Dir_Nithilan.”

As soon as the announcement was made, internet users rushed to the comment section of the post to express their excitement. One wrote, “This is what happens when the content speaks loud.” Another wrote, “Finally… Confirmed Greatest of all time…. Matthew McConaughey To Star In Maharaja Remake?
Well, the makers of the film have yet to comment on the matter of whether the Hollywood remake would be headlined by Matthew McConaughey. As per a Hindustan Times report, several social media pages have created buzz surrounding the casting of the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days actor.

The media publication stated that one of Maharaja’s producers, Sudhan Sundaram, revealed during an interaction with Times of India that it was the film’s INR 91 crore success in China which prompted an agency to approach them for remake rights. He went on to add that an A-lister has been lined up for the remake, which is set to go on the floor next year. He told the publication, “Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm.”

Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the neo-noir film is produced by The Route, Think Studios, and Passion Studios. Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Sachana Namidass, Natty Subramaniam, Mamta Mohandas and others, Maharaja was released in 2024. The movie follows the story of a desperate father filing a complaint at the police station about a stolen dustbin named Lakshmi. As the events of the film unfold, the police are faced with a brutal reality during their ongoing investigation.
