Elon Musk has escalated his Starlink India dispute with a sarcastic open letter in a tweet addressed to Mukesh Ambani, a day after accusing unnamed "oligarchs" of blocking the satellite service's entry. In a post on X/Twitter, he began with "Dear Prime Minister Ambani" and apologized for "not realizing that you are the real boss of India." He then asked whether Ambani would "nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete" and said the Reliance chief would naturally prefer to maintain his "monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India."
Dear Prime Minister Ambani,
Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India.
Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete?
There are many areas of India, as there are in all countries, with no Internet access, which denies children the opportunity for education and for small businesses the opportunity to sell their goods to a global market. Starlink would change their lives for the better.
Thank you
Reliance BJP Funding?
In a separate post, Musk shared screenshots of two news reports on Reliance and political funding for the party in power currently. One of the news reports, an Al Jazeera exclusive, headlined "How a Reliance-funded firm boosts BJP's campaigns on Facebook." Its standfirst says legal loopholes and selective use of rules allowed a Reliance company to pump millions into promoting the BJP during elections.
The other is an Indian Express article archived on March 21, 2024. It reported that Reliance-linked Qwik Supply gave Rs 385 crore to the BJP and Rs 25 crore to the Shiv Sena. According to the paper, Qwik Supply was the third largest donor among those using electoral bonds. It bought bonds worth Rs 410 crore between 2021-22 and 2023-24, and all but Rs 25 crore went to the BJP.
Neither Ambani nor Reliance has reacted to any of Musk’s tweets. However, earlier the government denied playing favorites in a tweet without naming Musk.
Btw, ya’ll remember the Chinese app TikTok donated Rs 30 crore in the PM Cares fund? And is still banned in India?
Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India.
Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to…
