Presented by Baz Ashmawy, DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland is a heartwarming show that delivers real-life results. Over the course of just nine days, through the power of goodwill, hard work, and community spirit, a significant home renovation will take place for a family in need.
Each of the families featured on the show faces difficult personal circumstances and needs help to improve their quality of life.
The battalions of high-vis vests and hard hats are corralled and cajoled by Baz, who, as always, keeps spirits high and tensions low as teams work into the night to realise these impressive constructions and overhauls.
Carter's story
Four-year-old Carter was born with a rare genetic condition. He spent the first two years of his life in and out of hospital, requiring highly specialised medical care, while his parents, Alex and Nikita, and his older brother AJ, remained by his side.
From birth, Carter's developmental future has been uncertain, and he required round-the-clock care. He is entirely dependent on his parents for all aspects of his care. He cannot speak, sit independently, or walk, and is fed via a tube directly into his stomach. At night, he relies on a CPAP machine to maintain safe oxygen levels.
Alex works as his full-time carer, while Nikita works full-time to support the family, but the logistics of bringing Carter upstairs to his bedroom (he currently weighs about 16kg) are getting increasingly difficult.
Carter must be carried several times a day between the bedroom, bathroom, and living area. Given the need for ongoing physiotherapy and the bulky equipment it requires, adequate storage at home is essential. It is recommended by his Occupational Therapist that the house be adapted for Carter, but understandably, due to the high cost, this has not been possible.
Now, with the help of DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland, that can finally change. In the second episode, the team travels to Westbury, on the border of Limerick and Clare, to transform the home of the Purcell family.
