The Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy is one of the largest aircraft ever constructed and the biggest tactical airlift platform in the US Air Force inventory. The colossal aircraft was designed to deliver everything from a main battle tank to a fighter jet from the continental US to forward-deployed troops all around the world. To achieve its colossal cargo capacity of 281,001 pounds (127,460 kg), the plane has 28 wheels in its landing gear system that spread the load over the surface of the runway to increase the number of fields that it can operate from without damaging the surface.
The Super Galaxy also features the novel feature of being able to ‘kneel’ or tilt the nose of the plane down when it is loading and unloading. This makes it possible to bring in cargo that is both bulky and extremely heavy through the nose doors’ front ramp. The enormous plane can lower the front cargo deck to just six feet off the ground, which is perfectly level with standard flatbed trucks to make rapid cargo transfer smoother and more efficient. Combining these features with its massive payload and an impressive range of 5,524 statute miles (8,890 km) makes the C-5M one of the USAF’s most valuable planes.

Lockheed made the original C-5A Galaxy during the Vietnam conflict in order to give the US military a way to more rapidly re-equip its troops across the vast Pacific Ocean. The aircraft was made to operate out of semi-prepared or even dirt airfields in support of expeditionary military operations. Spreading its incredible weight across 28 tires greatly reduces the pounds per square inch the Galaxy exerts on any patch of land it rests on.
The landing gear configuration of the C-5M features one nose bogie with four wheels and four main gear bogies with six wheels each, two forward and four aft. Dispersing its forces across vast, isolated bases like those found in the Indo-Pacific region once again makes the features of the C-5 indispensable for overcoming tomorrow’s challenges.

Vietnam’s wartime airfields lacked specialized heavy-lifting cranes and material handling equipment. Because the C-5 could kneel to truck-bed height or drop its ramps flat to the tarmac, it required zero ground support equipment to unload. The ‘drive-thru’ capability of the C-5’s kneeling function also solved another problem: the risk of exposure to enemy fire. Airfields were frequent targets for rocket and mortar attacks at that time. The kneeling gear made it possible for the jet to unload 100 tons of cargo and take off again in under 30 minutes, minimizing its exposure to enemy fire.
When the C-5 entered service in 1970, the Air Force faced a logistical nightmare in Southeast Asia. Older airlifters like the C-124 Globemaster II could not carry oversized cargo like M48 Patton tanks or CH-47 Chinook helicopters without dismantling them first. The C-5 could fly them fully assembled. This is also extremely valuable to the ACE strategy, as dispersed airfields on remote Pacific Islands often lack heavy forklifts or specialized cargo-loading equipment.
Meanwhile, its enormous capacity means the plane can deliver nearly every piece of equipment required to set up a forward operating location in a single sortie. The colossal jet can deliver fuel tanks, maintenance equipment, and ordnance to set up temporary posts where tactical aircraft can be refueled, repaired, and rearmed in between missions. Then, when the fighters or bombers move on, the entire operation can be active and move to another location with just one C-5M.

Getting Loyal Wingmen Into The Fight
The Air Force is currently working to create a fleet of 1,000 loyal wingman drones to support its advanced crewed aircraft worldwide. These will be especially valuable in the Pacific, where the ACE strategy will be pushed to its limit. Transforming into a kind of mothership, the C-5M Super Galaxy will act as a mobile drone carrier and forward arming hub to sustain, launch, and rearm Collaborative Combat Aircraft right at the tactical edge. This allows a tiny team of airmen on a remote island to quickly fuel, weaponize, and launch a swarm of drones into the sky.
Once the C-5M delivers the drones to a remote Pacific island runway, it drops off the entire launch and sustainment package in one go. Many future CCAs are designed to be runway-independent, utilizing rocket-assisted takeoff bottles or trailer-mounted catapults. Using the kneeling mechanism, the C-5M drops its nose and tail ramps flat to the tarmac. Ground crews can roll multiple CCAs straight out of the aircraft. Depending on the exact size of the drone, it can either be delivered fully assembled and ready to go right away or quickly set up on site using modular containers.
This will be a massive force-enhancing capability as the USAF supports its own squadrons and its partners. Instead of flying thousands of miles from major bases, advanced platforms with data links like the F-35, F-47, and B-21 can fly separate missions and dynamically link up with drone wingmen as needed on routes that the C-5M just delivered and activated at an island outpost.

That same super-heavy-duty landing gear keeps it from damaging the tarmac every time it lands or takes off, preserving the tarmac’s integrity for other, less rugged aircraft that may need to touch down after the C-5M has departed.
