China Mobile Joins Linux Foundation

Linux Foundation has announced that the Chinese telecom operator China Mobile has recently become a formal member and the company is Linux Foundation's first Chinese enterprise-level member.

China Mobile has reportedly made a lot of explorations and attempts in the Linux field, including the development of the Linux-based OPhone OS mobile phone operating system and the development of a cloud computing system based on open source software. China Mobile's joining of the Linux Foundation shows the company's confidence in the development of Linux in China.

Cliff Miller, China chief representative in the Linux Foundation, told local media that China Mobile's joining of the Linux Foundation represents the operator's desire to be the Linux industry leader in China. Meanwhile, the Linux Foundation is looking forward to providing the over 500 million Chinese users with new choices based on the Linux platform.

Huang Xiaoqing, director for the China Mobile Research Institute, said that China Mobile will further promote the application of Linux and hopes to make global contributions to the development of Linux.

The Linux Foundation is the nonprofit consortium dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux. Founded in 2007, the Linux Foundation sponsors the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and is supported by leading technology companies and developers from around the world. The Linux Foundation promotes, protects and advances Linux by marshaling the resources of its members and the open source development community to ensure Linux remains free and technically advanced. At present, the Linux Foundation has over 100 enterprise member worldwide.
