Move over, basic coding bots, because China's artificial intelligence scene just dropped a massive upgrade that is sending shockwaves through the global cybersecurity world.
Beijing-based AI innovator Zhipu AI officially launched its next-generation foundational model, GLM-5.3, signaling a major leap forward from simple code generation to autonomous, deep-level digital defense. The release marks a crucial shift for open-source AI, transforming virtual assistants into active guardians of critical digital infrastructure.
The model's cybersecurity chops proved eye-popping in international benchmark testing. In the CyberGym vulnerability reasoning evaluation, GLM-5.3 posted a top score of 84.5 percent, narrowly edging out Anthropic's high-profile Mythos 5 model, which scored 83.8 percent when it debuted earlier this year. On the ExploitBench test, designed to evaluate complex reasoning and real-world vulnerability verification, GLM-5.3 scored 54.4 percent, more than doubling the performance of its previous-generation predecessor.
Zhipu did not just rely on synthetic lab tests to prove its point. Working alongside researchers from Tsinghua University and Nankai University, as well as top-tier Chinese cybersecurity firms like Qi An Xin, Venustech, Tencent Xuanwu Lab, DarkNavy, CyberKunlun, and Cloudbreak, the team put the AI through intensive red-teaming trials.
The field tests uncovered 2,436 verified vulnerabilities across 269 major software projects. More than 1,000 of those flaws were classified as medium-to-high risk, including long-hidden bugs lurking inside core operating systems like Android, Windows, and macOS, alongside widely used mobile messaging apps. Many of the vulnerabilities had gone unnoticed by human engineers for years or even decades.
Zhipu confirmed that the discovered flaws have been submitted to China's official national vulnerability databases, including CNVD and CNNVD, initiating coordinated patching protocols to protect public and enterprise infrastructure before malicious actors can exploit them.
