This is a clear step up from the OnePlus 15, which already offered a 165Hz display. OnePlus now wants that extra speed to matter in real games, not just on a spec sheet.
185Hz and 185FPS gaming
OnePlus says the higher refresh rate can improve display speed by 35%, while reducing control time by 11.1ms. The company is also introducing a new Wind Chaser Gaming Kernel and a custom triple gaming-chip system.
The goal is simple: keep games running at high frame rates with fewer drops. OnePlus says even games that do not natively support 185FPS can use its technology to reach the higher frame rate. That claim will need real-world testing, but the idea is certainly interesting.
Snapdragon power
OnePlus has already confirmed that the phone will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Extreme chipset. The company says the new chip will work with the Wind Chaser Gaming Kernel to deliver the 185FPS gaming experience.
The OnePlus 16 is also expected to feature a large 9,000mAh battery, although that capacity has not been officially confirmed yet. Earlier reports also pointed to 100W wired charging.
For me, the combination of a 185Hz screen and a 9,000mAh battery is the part worth watching. High refresh rates can consume more power, so battery efficiency will be just as important as peak performance.
Launch date confirmed
The OnePlus 16 will launch in China on October 12. OnePlus has already opened reservations through its Chinese website. Pricing has not been announced yet.
The company has also confirmed several design details, including Dark Forest, Mars Masterpiece and Tomorrow Starlight color options. OnePlus is clearly making gaming a major part of the OnePlus 16 story. Now we just need to see whether 185FPS feels as impressive in real games as it sounds on paper.
