Linux system developer Canonical launched the new UbuntuKylin operating system, targeting the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, Canonical launched its Ubuntu 13.04 version operating system, which is the base for the development of UbuntuKylin.

Apart from supporting the Chinese language, UbuntuKylin initially adds three functions customized for the Chinese market, including a Chinese lunar calendar, music search, and weather application. In the future, UbuntuKylin will have a Chinese input method, map, shopping, and online payment services.

UbuntuKylin is mainly developed by CCN Open Source Innovation Joint Lab, which was jointly founded by MIIT's Software and Integrated Chip Promotions Center; Canonical; and the National University of Defense Technology on March 27, 2013.

Yu Liqiang, Chinese chief representative of Ubuntu, said that UbuntuKylin is authorized by the technical committee of Ubuntu and it is based on the open-source model of Ubuntu. This operating system will have an updated version every six months. Many localized applications of UbuntuKylin will be published with the Ubuntu 14.04 version.

Han Dan, Canonical's representative in the Chinese market, said that Canonical China is cooperating with original equipment makers like Dell and HP to gain their support of UbuntuKylin.
