According to a recent report by Norson Telecom Consulting, WCDMA is likely to be chosen by the majority of China's state-owned telecom operators for their 3G mobile-phone networks, which could strike a serious blow to companies such as Qualcomm Inc. and Datang Telecom Technology & Industry Group, the main advocates of WCDMA's competitors – CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA.
Nonetheless, these concerns may prove unfounded as the it is still not known when the Chinese government will issue business licenses for 3G mobile services, although it is expected that the four major operators will each be granted a license at some point in the second half of 2004. WCDMA, is considered to be the easiest upgrade for China's existing GSM network.
