Renesas Technology Corp. of Japan is working with Mobile Communications Research, the Shanghai branch of the China's Institute of Computing Technology on third-generation mobile phone development for the Chinese market based on Renesas' SH-Mobile processor.
The groups are working on a standard specification proposal for 3G/4G phones suitable for China and based on scalable hardware and software platforms. The partners also plan to devise development tools and reference platforms for smartphones.
Renesas will focus on evaluation kits and software drivers using its SH-Mobile core technology while Mobile Communications Research will be responsible for hardware design and SH-Mobile based Smartphone platforms. The Chinese group will also focus on porting applications such as voice-recognition and fingerprint-recognition into the SH-Mobile processor. The initial 3G Smartphone joint development is expected to be completed by the middle of 2004.
