Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and BLX IC Design Corporation Ltd., recently announced they have opened a new AMD/BLX Computing Client Development Center in Beijing.
As one of the world's most important and fastest growing semiconductor markets, AMD continues to increase its commitment and focus in China by working closely with strong local partners and numerous government entities. The AMD/BLX Development Center and its product solutions will aim to meet customers' needs for complete computing client solutions in the China region. The newly opened development center will integrate AMD and BLX technologies and solutions at different levels to deliver innovative thin client solutions to customers.
The first set of solutions from the center are two Thin Client Reference Designs powered by low-power, high-performance AMD Alchemy processor solutions and BLX Godson processor technology. These thin client solutions are designed to enable customers to improve the overall computing experience, enhance localized content and help bring their products to market in a timely and cost-effective manner. These Linux-based BLX Thin Client RDKs are designed to deliver multimedia capabilities with streaming video support at a competitive low system cost. Designed for a broad customer base, BLX leveraged AMD Alchemy technology to enable an advanced multimedia experience with media-rich consumer applications such as the playback of digital video, digital movies and music. As multimedia becomes increasingly pervasive, such functionality will be included in a growing number of products, including client and networking devices. BLX plans to enhance the multimedia features and capacity in its thin client solutions with advanced software and chip technologies in the near future. These advanced solutions are designed to allow BLX to broaden its market base in China and around the world.
AMD and BLX plan to provide strong resource and support to the development center. BLX plans to also target appropriate OEMs through proactive sales and marketing initiatives. Additionally, AMD plans to actively promote the designs from the AMD/BLX Development Center to a broader global OEM market outside the Greater China region. Target opportunities for these solutions include thin client, mobile client devices, and access/networking devices.
The BLX Thin Client RDK includes both hardware and software solutions designed to help OEMs bring thin client designs to market quickly. The RDK GSTB-4001 will be powered by the 400Mhz AMD Alchemy Au1500 low-power processor, supports on board PC100 SDRAM memory up to 128MB, 1024×768@16bit graphic resolution, integrated 1x PCI 33Mhz/66Mhz slot, 4 xUSB1.1, 2×10/100 Base-T, 2xUART, AC-97, VGA port on a 17cmx17cm small size board. Software includes Linux OS (2.4.18 Kernel), MP3 player, Media Player for MPEG1, drivers, and software development tool set. Windows CE and other OS support is planned. The RDK GSTB-4001 is designed for low-power compact thin client, network firewall/VPN for small office, and embedded control application.
