Nokia Wins TETRA Terminal Contract

February 11, 2004
Telecom & Wireless

Nokia strengthened its position as the leading TETRA network and terminal supplier with its latest TETRA terminal win, the biggest TETRA terminal contract ever awarded in China.

Nokia (China) Investment Co., Ltd. and Beijing Just Top Network Communications Company Limited have signed a contract for delivery of TETRA terminals for the Beijing Government Shared TETRA Network. The contract covers the Nokia THR850 and THR880 handportables and Nokia TMR880 mobile radios on the 800 MHz frequency band. The deliveries will start during the first quarter of 2004.

The related Beijing municipal departments and the Beijing police will primarily use the terminals in the multi-agency TETRA network operated by Beijing Just Top Network Communications Company Limited. The network adopts Nokia's leading-edge entire TETRA IP equipment, including switching equipment, base stations, dispatcher stations and network management. The first construction phase of the network has been completed now, covering the entire Beijing metropolitan area, nearby key counties and major parts of the main highways. It will be put to use in the first half of 2004, serving as many as 50,000 subscribers.

The TETRA terminals provided by Nokia for Beijing shared TETRA network have been widely used in Police, Fire Control, Rescue and other professional mobile radio communications organizations, with advanced group communications, enhanced safety and effective data communications through IP and WAP protocol. The Nokia THR880 handportable and TMR880 mobile radio are the first TETRA terminals in the market with a high-resolution colour display featuring clear symbols, making it easy to read and access information. The unique voice feedback feature guides users and confirms their selections, freeing the hands and eyes to focus on the task at hand, and thus improving officer safety. All terminals have sophisticated connectivity for a wide variety of applications.
