China Mobile To Jump Into Online Music

April 24, 2006
Telecom & Wireless

China Mobile (CHA) says that it hopes to jump into the wireless music industry by cooperating directly with recording companies.

China Mobile says it will launch a unified music platform which is called Central Music Platform to provide wireless music services such as ringtones and mobile phone music downloads.

China Mobile tells local media that it hopes that by doing so, it and the album company can equally split the income.

A China Mobile representative says that during the initial period China Mobile will only seek cooperation with big album companies and give some room for wireless service providers to grow their own wireless music businesses.

China Mobile will, in effect, be competing with these service providers. Currently, China Mobile operates through the service providers to reach the album companies, and it only shares a third of the total income with the service providers.
