Huawei Will Invest CNY5 Billion To Build R&D Center In Wuhan

Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei has launched a worldwide design contest for its Wuhan research and development center, in which the company will invest CNY5 billion, and the construction for this new R&D center will formally start in 2012.

According to Huawei, the company will establish the Wuhan base as its main location. Located at Guanggu Future Technology City, Huawei's Wuhan R&D center covers an area of about 1,500 mu, and it will focus on optoelectronic systems, components, and related cutting-edge electronic technologies. The first phase of the center will have an area of 558 mu. The construction of the first phase will be started in 2012 and completed in 2015. By then, there will be 10,000 to 15,000 R&D staff in the center, which is expected to realize an annual output of CNY6 billion and contribute taxes of CNY450 million.

Tang Liangzhi, mayor of Wuhan, said while paying a visit to Huawei in Shenzhen that he hoped the two parties could find more cooperation opportunities combining Huawei's development strategy. Tang also said they will establish a work group led by deputy mayor of Wuhan to serve Huawei for its development in the city.

Huawei is a leading telecom solutions provider in the world and its products and solutions are applied in over 140 countries, serving one-third of the world's population via 45 operators. In 2010, Huawei's sales reached CNY185.2 billion and its net profit was CNY23.8 billion.
