The news that the White House has reached a “basic consensus” with China to resolve the fate of TikTok will come as a relief to the millions of Americans, mostly young, who use the Chinese social media app. President Donald Trump has been serially delaying enforcement of a 2024 law that would ban the app in the United States, and the perpetual uncertainty serves no one’s interests. But the administration will need to release more details to show it’s closing in on a deal that addresses TikTok’s security risks rather than entrenching them.
