Chinese tech companies, including Tencent Holdings and AgiBot, are appointing millennials and even Gen Z individuals as chief scientists to spearhead advanced research in artificial intelligence and robotics. One standout is Vinces Yao Shunyu, a 28-year-old former OpenAI researcher who recently joined Tencent as the chief AI scientist. Yao, a graduate of Princeton University and Tsinghua University, played a key role in developing OpenAI's initial AI agents and has emphasized the importance of "context learning" in future AI model design. Tencent also boasts computer vision expert Zhang Zhengyou as its chief scientist, who received the prestigious Helmholtz Prize for his groundbreaking work in the field.
Other companies making similar appointments include PrimeBot, the robotics division of Swancor Advanced Materials, now owned by AgiBot. PrimeBot recently named Peking University professor Dong Hao, a post-1990s generation academic, as its chief scientist. Dong, an associate professor at the university's School of Computer Science and an Imperial College London PhD graduate, brings valuable expertise to the role.
Meanwhile, AgiBot's own chief scientist, Luo Jianlan, aged 33, previously worked at Google's "moon shot factory" and Google DeepMind. Collaborating with renowned computer scientist Sergey Levine, Luo has a strong background in cutting-edge AI research. These appointments reflect a strategic shift towards younger, innovative talent in key research positions within China's tech sector, signaling a new era of leadership and innovation in AI and robotics development.
