Researchers in China have unveiled a groundbreaking organic lithium-ion battery that combines high performance, safety, and resilience in extreme conditions, ushering in a new era in energy storage. The innovative battery, developed by Chinese scientists, can operate in harsh environments while providing enhanced safety and flexibility. Published in Nature, the research was spearheaded by Professor Xu Yunhua of Tianjin University in partnership with the South China University of Technology.
Unlike conventional batteries that use inorganic cathodes such as cobalt and nickel, which have limitations in scarcity and performance under extreme conditions, the team introduced a unique organic cathode material that is both abundant and environmentally sustainable. Through testing, the battery demonstrated an energy density exceeding 250 watt-hours per kilogram, surpassing traditional lithium iron phosphate designs.
Moreover, the battery exhibited exceptional durability, retaining structural integrity and full capacity in temperatures ranging from –70°C to 80°C. It also passed puncture safety tests without any fire or thermal runaway incidents. Professor Xu emphasized that this technology addresses the shortcomings of traditional batteries by offering commercial-level energy density with superior safety and operational capabilities. The team is now focused on scaling up the innovation for industrial production and is planning to establish a pilot manufacturing line.
