Investigation Launched into DoorDash's Use of Moonshot AI's Kimi K2.6 Model

Founder and chief executive Tony Xu is under scrutiny as US lawmakers investigate DoorDash's utilization of Moonshot AI's Kimi K2.6 model. The lawmakers have requested detailed information by August 14 regarding each Chinese model DoorDash employs and any security assessments conducted on these models. Additionally, DoorDash staff involved in AI infrastructure, software security, model evaluation, procurement, and legal or compliance review are expected to appear for an in-person briefing by August 21.

The letter from the Committees highlights the potential risks associated with US companies, including both large technology firms and start-ups, adopting PRC-developed open-weight models like Kimi K3. While these models offer competitive capabilities, cost efficiency, customizability, and diversity in providers, the lawmakers stress the importance of risk-based safeguards due to national security concerns tied to reliance on entities under PRC jurisdiction.

The inquiry raises questions about whether China's latest AI model, Kimi K3, could trigger a situation akin to the DeepSeek incident. With a focus on the growing trend of US companies considering and deploying models developed in the PRC, the investigation underscores the necessity for ensuring security measures and addressing national security implications in an increasingly interconnected global AI landscape.
