US Issues Ultimatum to Countries in AI Race: Choose Between Washington Coalition and China

The U.S. State Department is set to send a letter to 35 countries that signed the U.S. "AI Opportunity Statement," asking them to pick a side in the global AI competition. The letter emphasizes the need for countries to choose which technology ecosystem they support as the U.S. and China vie for AI dominance. The State Department's message underscores the importance of commitment to the Pax Silica Declaration, signaling that participation in competing initiatives may not be compatible.

Washington's Pax Silica initiative, aimed at securing essential supply chains for advanced AI, has garnered support from around two dozen countries, including key allies like Japan, Australia, and South Korea. However, Kazakhstan's decision to join both Pax Silica and China's AI initiative has raised questions about the feasibility of maintaining relationships with both blocs. The situation highlights the challenges countries face in navigating the complex geopolitics of the AI landscape.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's launch of the "World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization" in July positioned China's AI technology as an alternative to U.S. dominance in the sector. China's rapid advancements in AI, particularly in narrowing the performance gap with U.S. systems, have elevated the competition between the two global players. Beijing's considerations of restricting overseas access to Chinese models further underscore the intensifying national security dimensions of the AI race.

The U.S. official conveyed concerns that countries cannot simultaneously align with both technology ecosystems, cautioning against attempts to straddle the divide. The official emphasized the challenge of maintaining credibility as trusted partners in one AI bloc while participating in a rival initiative spearheaded by China. China, on the other hand, criticized Washington's approach, arguing that forcing countries to choose sides in the AI race would hinder global progress and not serve anyone's interests. The conflicting perspectives reflect the underlying tensions in the evolving AI landscape, shaped by geopolitical rivalries and technological ambitions.
