Motorola Launches Cheaper Smartphone In China

China Unicom and Motorola have jointly launched Motorola's first low-price smartphone XT390 in China.

This is reportedly the first time for Motorola to launch a smartphone with price of around CNY1,000 in China and the company is the first international mobile phone maker to support China's "CNY1,000 smartphone strategy".

Motorola XT390 adopts the Android 2.3 operating system, a 3.5-inch screen, a 800MHz CPU, and it supports WCDMA and GSM networks. Its retail price without a contract is CNY1,299 and the price is CNY1,599 if binding with a China Unicom contract.

China Unicom has launched two types of contracts for Motorola XT390. If users subscribe to China Unicom's 3G packages with monthly fee of CNY96 or above, they can gain the smartphones for free. They can also choose to buy the smartphones with subsidies.

Prior to this, China Unicom launched smartphones with prices around CNY1,000 in cooperation with Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, and Coolpad, which are all Chinese manufacturers. According to remarks made to local media by Zhou Youmeng, general manager for the sales department of China Unicom, in 2012, the market scale of smartphones with prices under CNY1,000 is expected to reach 90 million units; while the market scale of those between CNY1,000 and CNY2,000 will reach 60 million units.
