MII Will Unify Short Message Service Code

The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has worked out measures unifying the SMS service code of the four major domestic operators.

These measures are expected to be enacted soon, though a definitive timetable has not been announced.

MII will recall the service codes of the current service providers and re-allocate to each of them an 8-digit number that can be used on the SMS value-added service platforms of the four operators: China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom and China Netcom.

Although the work on unifying the service code has been initiated, the service providers say that they have not received any notice from their operators.

A deputy manager from China Unicom's Value-Added Service Department says that the change of the code will involve much work.
