Microsoft China Will Cut More Than 300 Jobs

Just days after announcing new initiatives in Hangzhou, Taiwan media reports that Microsoft will cut more than 300 jobs in the Chinese mainland and more than 10 jobs in Taiwan in the second round of its staff reduction.

Taiwan's Electronic Times quoted an unnamed insider as saying that the second round of staff reductions at Microsoft were formally started last week, and more than 300 employees in the Chinese mainland and over 10 from Taiwan would be affected, which also included some management personnel of the company.

Zhang Yiyi, a public relations representative from Microsoft Taiwan, has confirmed that the company did personnel adjustments last week, but denied that it was a staff reduction. Zhang said that the adjustment on human resource this time was nothing to do with the seniority and performance of the individuals involved. However, Zhang refused to disclose the detailed number of employees to be cut in Taiwan.

It is understood that most of the employees cut by Microsoft are from the company's MCS, EPG and Windows Live departments, and several of them have worked for years in Microsoft and are senior managers of the company.

Last week, Microsoft China announced that it had signed a three-year strategic cooperation memorandum with the Hangzhou municipal government and Microsoft will set up its first cloud computer center in Hangzhou. The two sides will cooperate to improve the innovative capacity of local software companies, further improve the local environment for intellectual property rights protection, and build Hangzhou as a model city for innovation and intellectual property rights protection.
