Samsung Farms Out Laptop Production To Taiwanese Maker

May 31, 2012
Computing | Gadgets & Electronics

South Korean electronics company Samsung will apparently outsource the production of its laptop products for the first time, and the company has allegedly delivered the initial original design manufacturer order to Taiwan's Compal.

According to information from a Taiwanese laptop supply chain maker, Compal gained the ODM order for four types of Samsung laptops. The shipment will start from June 2012 and the total shipments will reach between two million and three million units by the end of this year. Though Samsung has not yet decided its order amount for 2013, the shipment is expected to increase continuously.

In the first quarter of 2012, Samsung ranked seventh in the global laptop market, following HP, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, Asus, and Toshiba. The new outsourcing strategy aims to help Samsung reduce costs and enhance price competitiveness in the global laptop market.

In 2010, Samsung's laptop shipment was ten million units, and the number was 13.1 million in 2011. For the year 2012, the South Korean company aims at total shipment of 20 million laptops.
