The challenges facing the young are well known, from pressure to perform in examinations to the safe and responsible use of new technology. Children today grow up in a highly competitive environment. It is important to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of those who overcome the difficulties and excel.

The Student of the Year Awards, which marked their 45th edition with a ceremony attended by pupils, teachers, parents and former winners on Saturday, provides a valuable platform to celebrate the successes of Hong Kong’s young generation.

There are 40 awards, recognising not only academic excellence but also achievements in diverse fields including art, music, science, mathematics, personal development and community service.

The grand prizewinner this year was Jayden Tang, a Form Five student at Ying Wa College, who founded NGO and student-athlete platform Health is Wealth, leading others to support refugees and the elderly. More than 900 nominations were received from 181 schools, a record, displaying the prestige and growth of the awards, which are organised by the South China Morning Post, sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club and supported by the Education Bureau.

Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki highlighted the role the awards play in inspiring young people to shine and reach “even greater heights”. He underlined the need to nurture a new generation with a global perspective and a sense of responsibility, as Hong Kong works to fulfil its role in China’s 15th five-year plan. Jockey Club CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said his organisation was honoured to have sponsored the awards for 13 years and stressed the contest’s role in encouraging the young to work for the good of society.

The awards, which began in the 1970s and were relaunched in 2013 after a seven-year break, continue to evolve and move with the times. Next year will see the inclusion of a new category for AI literacy. There are also ambitious plans to expand the competition beyond the city’s borders and into the Greater Bay Area.
