China’s labor market has officially entered the era of physical artificial intelligence, with Beijing rubber-stamping a new wave of high-tech professions just as retail heavyweight JD.com unveils a massive infrastructure bet on industrial robotics.

On September 9, 2026, China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security officially released 11 new professions, highlighted by "embodied intelligence robot application technicians" and "motion data analysts," pushing the nation's official count of recognized digital professions to 113.

The regulatory update comes as industries scramble to fill a gaping talent deficit in embodied AI, where regional research and development posts face a staggering supply-demand ratio of up to 1:10. To bridge the gap, Chinese municipal hubs and enterprises are establishing specialized "robot schools," such as a 1:1 real-world simulation training ground operated by the Xiongan Group that covers industrial logistics, retail, and household environments. In these facilities, technicians act as digital instructors, guiding robotic arms through physical tasks and feeding training data into foundation models so machines can autonomously replicate complex human movements.

Simultaneously, traditional Chinese e-commerce behemoth JD.com announced a sweeping pivot into physical AI infrastructure, declaring plans to build the world’s largest embodied intelligence data center. Designed to capture over 10 million hours of real-world human operational video data within the next two years, the initiative aims to solve the artificial intelligence sector's notorious "data famine" by converting physical labor into structured training fuel.

Over the next five years, JD plans to construct more than 80 "RoboBase" industrial bases around China, offering end-to-end services spanning robot R&D, manufacturing, pilot testing, data collection, and maintenance. Backed by JD Cloud, the company is partnering with firms like Moore Threads to construct massive domestic GPU clusters while rolling out proprietary foundation models, including its newly launched interactive world model, JoyAI-Echo WM. By combining official workforce recognition with heavy e-commerce backing for physical AI data collection, China is rapidly accelerating the transition of humanoid and wheeled robots from controlled lab environments into the commercial mainstream.
