PHATTHALUNG: A research-driven initiative to develop premium meat products from naturally raised swamp buffalo in the Talay Noi wetlands is gaining traction, with demand growing locally and from China.
The initiative, led by Thaksin University's Phatthalung Campus in collaboration with local communities and livestock authorities, is looking to expand across southern Thailand. It aims to transform the area's traditionally raised swamp buffalo into a high-value product while preserving the centuries-old farming system within Phatthalung's Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).
Through its Thailand-China Technology Exchange Research Centre for the Swamp Buffalo Farming System, the university is developing the buffalo meat products to generate more income for farmers and strengthen the economic potential of the agricultural heritage site. The programme, with support from buffalo farmers in Hua Pa Khiao community in Khuan Khanun district, combines scientific research with local knowledge and traditional farming practices to enhance production. The approach aligns with the Food and Agriculture Organisation's GIAHS framework, which promotes agricultural systems that balance biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management and community livelihoods.
Researchers said processed products, including grilled buffalo meat, sun-dried buffalo meat and buffalo skewers, have received favourable consumer feedback at two recent promotional events. Many consumers described the meat as tender, flavourful and free of unpleasant odours.
Expansion is planned in Trang, Krabi and the southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat after the products also drew positive interest from participants, particularly from China, at an international cooperation forum, highlighting their export potential.
Aporn Songsaeng, head of the Thai–Chinese Technology Exchange Research Centre, said naturally raised Talay Noi buffalo produce dark red meat containing 21.36% protein and only 0.85% fat, making it well suited for premium health-oriented products.
