China’s Gaming Sector Soars as Tech Giants Expand PC Dominance, Mobile Updates, and Minor Protections

China’s online gaming industry continues to demonstrate significant operational momentum through heavy personal computer dominance, new mobile gameplay features, and major trade convention showcases, even as platforms step up security protocols to protect younger players.

Tencent Holdings solidified its near-monopoly over China's personal computer (PC) gaming market in July 2026, according to regional cybercafe popularity rankings released Monday, August 10. Tencent products claimed nine of the top ten spots across domestic internet cafes, led by hit titles such as League of Legends, VALORANT, Delta Force, and CrossFire. Newly launched PC title Uncontrolled Evolution climbed to the eleventh position shortly after its July 9 public debut. Analysts view offline internet cafes as a primary benchmark for PC revenue and player engagement, with Tencent's established lineup providing steady operational cash flow and insulating the conglomerate against broader market fluctuations.

Concurrently, developers are expanding the operational lifespans of established mobile titles through frequent content updates. Tencent recently released a card-based gameplay mode titled Area: Blockade on the test server for its tactical shooter game Arena Breakout. The feature addition coincided with balance updates to firearms, items, and in-game interactions designed to drive user retention and extend monetization cycles across mature mobile titles.

Major domestic publishers also showcased their product pipelines at industry gatherings. Giant Network highlighted a broad portfolio of titles at the 23rd China Digital Entertainment Expo (ChinaJoy), which opened July 31 in Shanghai. The company’s display featured games including Supernatural Action Group, Generals Kill, ZT Online, Night of Full Moon, Battle of Balls, and Space Kill. The exhibit incorporated cultural elements derived from Nuo opera, a national intangible cultural heritage, paired with Chinese mystery exploration aesthetic themes. Giant Network reported that Supernatural Action Group accumulated over 200 million registered users and surpassed 10 million daily active users by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

As player engagement grows across PC, mobile, and offline exhibition channels, online platforms are implementing broader consumer safety measures during the peak summer holiday season, responding to national directives for the digital protection of minors. Servicing platform Crab Game Service issued security guidelines in early August 2026 to counter scams targeting underage players, such as fake account trades, low-cost top-ups, and unauthorized refund schemes.

The trading platform emphasized that minor protection extends beyond enforcing transaction age limits, requiring proactive measures to dismantle fake websites, unauthorized applications, and fraudulent social media channels that exploit brand identity to target young users. Industry platform operators, application stores, and parents are increasingly urged to coordinate safeguards, verify official transaction channels, and secure payment permissions to curb illicit online financial activities.
